West Devon U12s v North Devon U12s 2012
West Devon Under 12s v North Devon Under 12s

Sunday 6th May, Yelverton Cricket Club

West Devon 119-6 (P Widdecombe 48*; Gibbs 2-16, Lathwell 2-18) beat North Devon 118-8 (Stanbury 45; B Payne 2-15, B Dunlop 2-21, C Worth 2-22) by 4 wickets

West Devon won the toss and had no hesitation in asking North Devon to bat first on another grey cold day.  The first 10 overs were a game of attrition as the North battled hard to pick up singles and the West’s opening bowlers Payne and Worth strove for early wickets and ended with the North on 26-2 which both sides would be reasonably happy with.  The second quarter went to the West with Farnham (8 runs off 8 overs) and Dunlop restricting the North batters and the North looked in trouble at 39-5 at the halfway stage.  It was left to Carl Stanbury (45) to change the match in favour of the North.  Dropped in single figures, Stanbury took advantage of his second life and drove powerfully down the ground to put on a partnership of 27 with Williams and 46 with Hannam as the West bowling and fielding lost some of its discipline. A total of 118-8 at the close of the innings was competitive on a damp pitch.

In reply the West started poorly with Julyan and Jones falling for ducks against Gibbs away swing and with Worth being caught they looked in a lot of trouble at 24-3 after the first 10 overs.  It was to be a flawless innings by West skipper Widdecombe (48 not out) that brought the West back into the game.  Widdecombe had solid partnerships of 34 with Horn, 29 with Casey and 29 with Payne that took the West home with 4 overs and 4 wickets remaining.
